Red Tags + Violations

Most people receive a warning tag after a licensed gas technician discovers an unsafe situation or something that violates gas codes and standards. Depending on the severity, your natural gas may be turned off for your safety until the equipment has been fixed. This is done to protect the residents of the home and property.

Why have I received a warning tag?

The technician writing the tag will explain the infraction in detail and what needs to be done to fix it. In most cases, it’s your gas provider writing the infraction, and they do not do any repairs on piping or equipment belonging to the homeowner.

Type A: If a licensed technician has identified an immediate danger—for example, a severe carbon monoxide leak—your furnace gets a Type A red tag and your natural gas will be turned off right away.

Type B: If the violation does not pose an immediate danger to the homeowner, a Type B warning tag will be applied and the local utility notified. This tag gives the customer a specified period of time to have the equipment repaired or replaced. If corrective action is not taken within the stipulated timeline, your natural gas will be turned off by the local utility—for example, Union Gas or Enbridge.

What should I do if I receive a warning tag?
